What size cage do I need?

I made this mistake before and trust me its heartbreaking to see your little baby rat growing up so big and not being able to move as much as s/he should. The best way to put it is you should spend about 90 to 100 dollars for a cage for your two rats because rats are always better in pairs and should I have someone to spend their life with. Each rat should have a minimum of 2 cubic feet of space, so the cage should be at least 30w30h18L. For maximum room for their toys and hide out spaces hammocks and all that type of stuff including your pets. The bottoms should be solid. NO WIRE BOTTOMS. Please do not use an aquarium due to the lack of ventilation that your rats will need.
THE CAGE ON THE RIGHT IS NOT A GOOD SIZE!!!!!

THE ONE ON THE RIGHT IS NOT A GOOD SIZE!!!!
(My personal story experiences buying a cage)
I went to the pet store to buy a cage for my little one and the store owner told me that this cage would be fine for about 7 months and boy was he wrong. After 3 months of having her I had to buy a new one. picture above to show the size difference. I am so upset I had not did more research about the cage size. I had looked up everything but this and needless to say its embarrassing but people need to know space is the best thing for your rat and their safety is their priority to you. Its worth the money please just buy the larger cage.

Dumbo, tailless, hairless rat?

The Dumbo, whose origins are in the United States, is characterized by having large, low, round ears on the sides of its head, while the Manx rat shares both its name and mutation with tailless Manx cats. Hairless rats are breed threw two parents that were rex haired. which causes the defect of hairlessnes effect. its also known as double rex. they may be partical hairless or have short hair. They may also have spot of hair that is fairly short that fall out and grow back about 7 times threw out there life.

Hairless and manx rats have been talked threw if it is ethical. some of the major points that are brought up that are some what harmful towards the animal itself.
Hairless rats have weak immune systems, get cold easier, sensitive skin, and get scratched easier which makes infection more acessiable.

Manx rats(tailess) has been cause for concern for their ability to cool themselves down because that is how rats regualte body heat. Thier tails also help balance them so without them they have poor sense of balance. The harmful affect medical could be any of the following; heat exhaustion, poor bowel and bladder control, falling from heights, and can be at risk for life-threatening deformities in the pelvic region like hind leg paralysis and megacolon.

they have diffrent types of rats? what kind?

Rats come in so many different types and colors with photos to show.

markings of rat
Berkshire – coloured top, white belly

Hooded – colour runs from full head down spine

Capped – colour on full head only

Variegated – a blaze, or short white strip on the forehead, with a fully coloured head and splotches or flecks of colour run down the back only

Siamese (typically a gradient of colour along the body, darkest at the base of the tail

Masked- coloring only on face.

"downunders" (an Australian variety which has a solid colour stripe on the belly or a colour marking that corresponds to those on top).

and all of these markings are popular or rare, depends on your area.

do pet rats make good pets?

The answer is YES. For most families rats make the perfect pet. They don't take up to much room nor do they need your attention 24/7. If you plan to let your child be the care giver of a rat please make sure they are ready for the responsibility a good age would be about 8 years of age. Rats are very intelligent animals. They can be taught to do certain tasks and most have great personalities. The more time you spend with your rat outside the cage the more of a relationship you will have with them. Rats are better in pairs or groups. Some people even compare them to dogs but smaller and easier to clean up after. Rats are not dirty animals they keep themselves groomed and clean. Rats are nocturnal they do most of their sleeping during the day but not all rats sleep during the day, every rat is different. They live for about 2-5 years. Their biggest medical downside would be tumors but you reduce their chances if you have them neutered or spayed. Which brings me to my next subject of which is better males(bucks) or females(does)? Females are more active and males are more lazy and do get a lot bigger than a female. Their cage should be cleaned at-least once a week and feed daily. Rats are the perfect pet for most people.

hello

I am starting this blog about pet rats. All the information you need will be right here on this site. I have as of 2010 become a proud rat owner. I have always wanted a fancy rat, but it was not till this year I had been able to become a mommy to a beautiful rat of my own. I love my rats more than anything. I have researched a lot about rats and in my previous researches I found many false details and I had felt i had to go to hundred different sites to find one answer about my rats. Anything from adoption, toys, food, cages, types, dry skin, sneezing, bonding, training, bedding, so much more.. I plan for this blog to be about information that everyone can use and for it to be truthful and all on one site. So lets buckle down and get started:)
